\nI came across this article and immediately wanted to use it as my current events article because it specifically speaks about younger children becoming familiarized with technology. Seeing that I do curriculum planning on a preschool, I find that even though the technology we learn about is fascinating and so beneficial it often times can't be incorporated into our unit plans do to the children's age. Therefore, I particularly enjoyed reading this article and learning that iphone applications are benefiting younger children's literacy as well as other academic areas. That is why I chose to share this article with you.
\nI also thought it related to what we are learning in class because it highlights on how society is so influenced by technology and it is an example of the social world\/social learning that we partake in. The generations that we are teaching are no longer learning through conventional means that we know of, but are "connected" to technology through iphone applications and other multi-media systems. \nThis article is from CNN.com's technology section. This article talks about the progression of voice recognition software and its progression into the new phase of hand held cell phone era. As always kinks are being worked out but this technology is hitting google.com and bing.com as well. Since people are able to search the web on their cellular devices this software is becoming more and more popular and it is also being used to translate speech into text messages and emails via the cellular devices. Of course, as with all technology, there are draw backs which are differences between voices and background noise interference and filtration. With that said, this technology improves each year and is translating with 80-90% efficiency.

\nThis article relates to our course topics because it is yet another tool to help our students improve learning through technology. In this case I'm thinking more the inclusion or special education aspect. If students who are visually or physically impaired need to communicate with their instructor this tool enables them to do so with a bit more ease than before. This also shows that technology is improving despite economic recessions. Although this technology takes up a lot of memory and processing on a hand held phone it is none the less important for students to be able to communicate efficiently and rapidly. Some students may not be fast at creating text messages or e-mails. Also, students can learn from improper speech if they use this program. This article is particularly relevant to my teaching because my school district has just purchased an iTouch (the iTouch can also be used) and the same communication software (Proloquo2Go) that JW is using for one of my Downs Syndrome students to help meet his communication needs (it is still on order, but I can\u2019t wait to use it with him).

\nMany autistic children have trouble communicating. Because they cannot communicate they get frustrated and act out. As the article stated, sign language may not always work them as a mode of communication, as well. Many of the communication devices for these children are bulky and expensive. It was wonderful to see that something so small and compact like the iPhone and the communication software that could be used with it made such a difference in JW\u2019s life. He could actually express his needs and feelings and that opened up a whole new world for him (I thought it was cute that he was even able to express what his favorite restaurant was). I also like the fact that he can put short sentences together and use voice commands, as well. It is such a useful and inexpensive tool that was not even imagined just a few years ago. It truly is an \u201cuntold story of Apple's popular audio devices\u201d. I also enjoyed the fact that it looks cool, especially with peers. That\u2019s important for students with disabilities. Being accepted by non-disabled peers can be difficult enough, but using technology that many students are familiar with and seeing that the special needs child can use it is an open door for socialization.

\nI believe that this article relates very nicely to what we have been learning about. We have been looking at quite a few technologies that students can use to help them learn. Some are very comprehensive like WISE or Symphony. Technology surveys, poll everywhere and Voicethread are not as comprehensive, but are valuable tools that students can use to create and apply, to their work. The iPhone and the communication software are very simple and on a level that JW could use. It became life changing for him. Going back to the videos we first saw at the beginning of the course, we learned that students want to be able to think, create, analyze and apply. After reading this article, I could see JW and students with disabilities like him being given the ability to think, create, analyze and apply, on their own learning level by using the iPhone and the communication software. It is a major accomplishment to be able to communicate and because children may be limited in so many other areas, this becomes a lifeline and great learning experience for them. We have also learned that people learn in many different ways. It is imperative to use technology that will be of the greatest benefit for them and for us as teachers to guide them. At first, I thought this was the way I was going to go when looking to report on a current event, however then I found this particular article I thought it was important to look at both sides of the rise in children and young adults using technology in so many areas of their lives.

\nThe article discusses the suicide of 15 year old Phoebe Prince from western Massachusetts. Phoebe recently moved from Ireland with her family and was the victim of cyber-bullying, as well as alleged rape and physical abuse. After reading many different articles focusing on the case, it is clear that although some of what occurred over the three month period of time leading up to her death took place at school, face to face, much of the bullying took place on social networking sites such as Facebook. The article talks about how Phoebe was the target of cyber-bullying which started when she began dating a popular upper classman. The investigation is ongoing so there is a great deal of information about the case available. So far, nine teens have been charged in the unrelenting bullying of the young girl. Six of the teens, four girls and two boys, face charges which include statutory rape, violation of civil rights resulting in injury, criminal harassment, and assault. Three younger girls face delinquency charges. Officials report that the harassment started in September as mean spirited comments at school and quickly moved onto online, in the form of cyber-bullying and from there began to spin out of control. Many of the different articles I found have comments from Phoebe\u2019s friends which talk about how once the comments and harassment moved online, it was picked up by many new people at school who previously didn\u2019t know the girl or didn\u2019t know of the harassment. The friends believe that when Phoebe became a target on Facebook that the bullying spun out of control and Phoebe became more and more withdrawn, feeling as though she could not return to school. This is not the first time cyber-bullying has resulted in death. In 2006, a 13 year old girl killed herself after being harassed on MySpace by a neighbor\u2019s mother who was posing as a 16 year old teenage boy.

\nI am certainly not saying that technology was to blame here. However, I wanted to show a different side to the effects of access to technology. I feel as though the rise in the use of technology, in the form of social networking sites for example, has a negative effect on young children. Bullying has always occurred, in some form, within the schools and it has always been a tough issue to tackle and get under control. However, I believe that in today\u2019s world with children as young as 10 years old becoming members of social networking sites bullying has taken on a whole new form. People feel as though they can bully and insult people to a greater extent because they do not feel as threatened when they are not face to face with the victim. Students feel as though they can gain power over targeted classmates when they bully over the internet because they are not held accountable and quickly gain a following of peers who simply want to be part of something or worse feel they need to join in so they do not end up on the other side of the abuse. It is also much more difficult for schools to monitor the bullying that occurs online among students because much of it takes place off school grounds. In this case for example, the school has disciplined the students involved in the abuse by not allowing them to return to school. This was possible because of the extent of the bullying and how much of it was carried over into the school and was seen by many students and faculty. Furthermore, this case, along with other similar to it, was cited when members of the Massachusetts Legislature passed anti-bullying legislation earlier this month. There needs to be more done to monitor what students are involved in online. A school is supposed to be a safe place for students. Even though there are many risk factors which make this idea hard to maintain, it is our job as educators to strive to make it possible. I know that we cannot be everywhere our students are and we cannot protect every student that walks through our doors. \n After starting my pre-prac observations and talking with a few teachers, I noticed a few of them have said, students are either going to be paying attention, have their heads down, or be texting in the back of the room, and they are right. I sat in one class where most of the students continued to text, whether girls had their phones in their handbags or students would try and hid their phone behind the student in front of them. However, teachers know it is there, and some decide not to fully inforce the "no texting" practices that most schools try to instill. I think that texting in school is something that is going to continue to be a problem, and be a hard thing to solve. I think that giving students more freedom, maybe to text during lunch, and then facing consequences for texting during class would show them that there is a time and a place. It would also show them that the school gives them the respect and responsibility to use their lunch period to have their cellphones.
