The author says that using technology in the classroom may not be useful without the proper training. Testing has proven that skill and drill software will not necessarily improve skills, and can in fact deter students from learning; whereas project-based software programs do improve skills and boost test performance.

The article goes on to say that the key to making technology useful in the classroom, so that it does inspire learning and improve performance, is professional development. Through training, teachers will develop the skills and ability to effectively utilize technology for project-based instruction. Professional development training to teach instructors how to use the technology to get the best results is necessary for success.

The author makes valid points and provides supporting evidence for his claim that professional development is important for educators. Effective use of technology needs to be taught so that it can play a positive role in enhancing academic achievement.

In the first paragraph, the author says that if educators cannot integrate new technology into their curriculum, students will only pursue their learning outside of schools. The article states that children do not have a choice of whether or not technology is in their lives: it is and educators need to realize this.

I really enjoyed this article. I thought that it had some very good points. I liked how the author stated, " It’s not about learning how to do PowerPoint; it’s about teaching students to use technology to teach themselves, to learn for themselves. In essence, it’s about teaching ourselves out of a job." I really do agree that it is important for educators to teach students about how to use technology to learn. I do not, however, feel that by doing so we are "teaching ourselves out of a job." I think that by doing this, we are just being effective educators and keeping the interest of our students so that they can learn in every way possible.

A is for App: How Smartphones, Handheld Computers Sparked an Educational Revolution

Summary

This article is about how Smartphones and handheld computers are making positive contributions in education around the world for the generation of users who have “never known a world without ubiquitous handheld and networked technology.”(1) Growing sums of money are flowing into finding technological solutions for the nation’s and the world’s problems and major foundations such as , Startl, funded by Gates, MacArthur and the Hewlett foundations are zeroing in on handheld technologies for preschool and primary grades. Along with Google, Nokia, Palm and Sony.(2)

TeacherMate is a handheld computer that runs full-color flash games on a platform partly open to volunteer developers worldwide. The software lets the teacher keep track of the students performance so she can set the skills, levels, and the allotted time for students for the upcoming week. The children have the freedom to choose from a variety of games and are unaware that the teacher has chosen these games based on the children’s skill needs. It allows the teacher to focus time and attention on small groups of children and the results have been improved math and reader levels amongst the users. It sells for about $100.00/bundle and it comes with games customized to match each of the major K-2 reading and math curricula.

Seth Weinberger, who is responsible with the design and creation of TeacherMate and dedicated to the development of reading and math software, started a non-profit called Innovations for Learning. Partnering with Chicago’s’ Academy for Urban School Leadership, they have been able to bring TeacherMate to 500 schools in 14 states, as well as, to Mexico, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, India, South Korea, Costa Rica, The Philippines and Palestine. The strategy behind the technology is to let kids figure it out for themselves how to work the programs and the results have been similar around the world. Children collaborate with each other, even when the menus were in English they are able to figure out how to play the games.

Richard Rowe, who once headed the one Laptop Per Child Foundation is also mentioned in the article. After leaving OLPC, Rowe started the Open Learning Exchange. OLE’s goal is to provide quality basic education to 1 billion children in 100 countries by 2015. It is structured as a global network of centers led by social entrepreneurs who share materials, best practices, and new technologies, including TeacherMates (8) Rowe postulates that because mobile phones have the almost the same features as the TeacherMate hardware, as well as the capacity to communicate two way as opposed the Teachermate one-way, that the mobile phone will prove to be a better, more affordable option to use in place of the current hardware being used.

Skeptics of technology in developing countries question the appropriateness of using technology because of the costs and think that the poorest countries may benefit more from the chalkboard and paper rather learning reading and writing.(9) Skeptics are also wary of the motives of cell hone makers and telecom service providers. Their presences could be used to target impressionable demographics, like children.

The article concludes with the notion of the role of the teacher changing form the “purveyor of information to the coach. And, that learning is student-centered and student-empowered.”(10)

Reflection

I chose this article because I think it epitomized so many topics we have covered in class. Collaboration, the changing role of the teacher, the globalization the world, the program and curriculum design in regards to technology, digital natives and the ease with which children figure out the mechanics of using technology.

The article both sings the praises of technology and the positive impact it can/will/is having on children allover the world and also the struggles and the issues that will need to be addressed as the use of technology in education continues.

These are some of the reasons for me, making this choice.

Sincerely,

I managed, I see, to put my mind map in the left-hand column here, where we click to go to pages for our assignments. How the heck did I do that?

I couldn't figure out how to easily add my MindMap to the page they're one. I tried to read Help, but it seems that I'm supposed to click on a bonsai tree icon, and I can't find it. I uploaded my MindMap by going into "Manage Wiki," going into "Files," uploading my MindMap there, then getting it onto the MindMap page. There's got to be an easier way?

I was finally able to post mine by going into "Manage Wikki" on the left-hand side of the page; clicking on the Files menu; and uploading my file into there, THEN adding it to the MindMap page. But I couldn't add my name.
